Accomodation rates rise for FIFA World Cup

Travel agents say the raising of accommodation rates in South Africa for this year's Football World Cup is not an uncommon occurrence.

House of Travel and Williment Travel Group both say demand for package deals to attend the event in June and July is very high.

Some All Whites fans are being quoted prices of $3000 per night for a hotel room.

Gilpin Travel says the reality is that when big events are on, such as sporting world cups or the Olympics, accommodation rates go up.

Managing director Keith Sumner says the same thing is happening in New Zealand ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

However, Bill Matthews, who worked in the travel industry for 40 years, says he would not be suprised if South African accomodation groups drop their rates prior to the event, as they look to fill empty rooms.
