Police investigate fatal pile-up on North Shore

Police in Auckland are investigating the cause of a fatal crash at a major intersection involving seven vehicles, including a police car.

An elderly motorist died at the scene after his car was crushed by a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The accident happened at the intersection of Rosedale and Bush roads in the North Shore suburb of Albany about 1pm on Tuesday.

North Shore area commander Les Paterson says a patrol car travelling to a serious incident had slowed to a virtual stop as it approached the intersection.

He says the officers saw a Jeep Cherokee coming up from behind them at considerable speed and tried to slow it down by blocking the gap between the lanes.

However, Mr Paterson says the jeep collided with the rear of the patrol car, pushing it forward at least 50 metres. The jeep then flipped and struck the elderly man's oncoming car.

Police say no pursuit was taking place before the crash.

The driver of the jeep has been taken to North Shore Hospital with moderate injuries.

A serious crash investigation has been launched and is being overseen by the CIB.
