Taxi company to change night bookings system

6:12 am on 3 February 2010

Auckland Co-op Taxis is introducing new procedures for night bookings effective immediately, after one of its drivers was killed.

Hiren Mohini, 39, died from stab wounds at about 1.30am on Sunday after picking up a passenger in central Auckland.

Police are examining CCTV footage from the area between Sky City and View Road in Mount Eden where his taxi crashed.

Auckland Co-op Taxis says it will keep pressing the Government for a clear response to issues of driver safety.

However, general manager Barrie White says the company will take its own security measures, which may include screens, cameras and even protective clothing for drivers.
