Police have released the name of the woman who died in suspicious circumstances at a private apartment block in Palmerston North.
She was Virginia Ford, who was 20, from Dunedin.
Manawatu police are treating the woman's death as a homicide and she was found after police were called late on Friday night.
Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
A 21-year-old man who lived at the same address has been arrested and has appeared in court.
He was charged with assault but police said more charges were likely.
Detectives said there had been an argument at the property earlier.
A post mortem examination was completed today and the police have preliminary results.
