Prisoner recaptured after seven weeks on run

The convicted armed robber caught on Thursday after seven weeks on the run has made a prompt plea of guilty to the charge of escaping from prison.

Kevin Polwart appeared in the North Shore District Court on Thursday afternoon after a tipoff from the public led to his arrest in Auckland just before 10am.

Police are considering laying other charges relating to his activities while on the run.

Polwart broke out of Auckland Prison at Paremoremo on 16 December, cutting through two wire perimeter fences and taunting police by leaving the message "Catch me if you can."

He was serving a sentence for armed robbery, having been jailed in 1999 for a $600,000 security van hold-up, and would have been eligible for parole in 18 months' time.

In 2001, Polwart escaped from Rimutaka Prison and was on the run for six weeks.
