Building consent process streamlined

3:45 pm on 4 February 2010

The Government is streamlining the consent process for companies that have a track record in building standardised homes and garages.

These companies are currently required to have the same design assessed and approved each time it is built.

Under the changes, companies will be able to apply to the Department of Building and Housing for an ongoing approval, provided the plans comply with the Building Code.

Councils will have to accept the approval and must issue a building consent within 10 days, instead of the usual 20 days.

Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson says this will ensure the consent process is less costly and cumbersome. He hopes the time and cost savings will be passed on to consumers.
