Road-rage suspect appears in court

3:38 pm on 25 March 2015

A man involved in an apparent road-rage incident appeared in the Christchurch District Court today and has been remanded for a psychiatric assessment.

The 51-year-old Ohoka man, who has been granted interim name suppression, was charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and cruelty to an animal.

The police said on Monday he tried to run over a pedestrian who had to jump a barbed-wire fence to escape.

The pedestrian's puppy was so badly injured it had to be put down.

The police said the incident occurred after the pedestrian signalled the driver to slow down on Downs Road near Swannanoa, and the driver took offence.

The driver entered no plea.
