Police in Christchurch say the number of drivers caught texting or talking on their cellphones has increased in recent weeks.
Texting or talking on hand-held mobile phones while driving became illegal in November last year.
Driver compliance in Canterbury was excellent when the law was passed but in recent weeks there has been a gradual increase in drivers flouting the rules, police say.
The penalty for texting or talking on a hand-held phone while driving is an $80 fine and 20 demerit points.
