The whitebait season is now open in most areas.
The season is open everywhere from 15 August except on the West Coast of the South Island, which opens on 1 September because whitebait there to have a different life cycle.
The Department of Conservation is patrolling rivers and streams to ensure the regulations are understood and followed.
Regulations include only one net per person, who must stay within 10 metres of it.
The use of gear that covers more than a third of the width of the water channel is prohibited.
The West Coast season ends on 14 November and on 30 November everywhere else.
