Chris Kahui lawyer confident twins' inquest will proceed

The lawyer for the father of the Kahui twins is confident the postponed inquest will go ahead eventually.

Three-month-old boys Chris and Cru Kahui died of traumatic head injuries in June 2006. Their father, Chris Kahui, was charged with murder over their deaths but acquitted in 2008.

His lawyer, Lorraine Smith, says her client wants the inquest to get under way so that he can have closure.

The inquest, initially set to begin on 22 February in the Auckland District Court, has been postponed. The officer who led the investigation into the twins' death, Detective Inspector John Timms, says that as far as he knows another date has not yet been set.

Chief coroner Neil Maclean had decided an inquest was to be held to look at matters wider than criminal guilt, to try to find answers the criminal investigation did not. He has not been able to be reached for comment.
