The new code follows the recent Independent Police Conduct Authority investigation into the so-called Roastbusters case, which found officers had mishandled investigations into the saga.

It clarifies and lists examples of conflicts of interest, misconduct, and serious misconduct.

Police commissioner Mike Bush said his priority was for police to build on the high levels of trust and confidence New Zealanders had in them.

The new code put emphasis on values such as professionalism, respect, integrity, commitment to Maori, empathy, and diversity.

The code was last changed in 2008.
