Aquaculture reform: rough waters ahead?

7:01 pm on 8 February 2010

The Government is bracing for strong opposition as it moves to overhaul the aquaculture industry.

A total of 223 submissions has been received on law reforms that Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley says will unlock the potential of a billion-dollar-plus industry.

Mr Heatley says all interests will be considered when the Government considers reform proposals.

Boaties and fishermen say they're concerned they will lose fishing grounds but Mr Heatley says there is plenty of coastal water space for everyone.

The minister says a select committee will call for public submissions on aquaculture reform.
