Waitangi flag decision defended

6:05 am on 9 February 2010

The head of the Waitangi National Trust is standing by a decision of the board not to fly the tino rangatiratanga flag on the Treaty grounds on Waitangi Day.

Chairman Pita Paraone from Ngati Hine says the board was unanimous in rejecting it as the official Maori flag.

The New Zealand flag, the naval ensign and the flag chosen by the northern Confederation of Tribes in 1834 were flown on the navy flagpole instead.

Mr Parone told Waatea News the board will formally review its decision at its next meeting, as it starts planning for the 2011 events.
