Fourteen charges have been laid against an Auckland man and his company for attempting to illegally export hazardous computer waste.

The charges stem from a investigation by the Ministry of Economic Development, after a tip-off was received in September.

The electronic waste was collected in 2009 as part of a project known as e-Day.

Alex Hong, who is also known as Steven Ansley, faces two charges of attemping to export hazardous waste from New Zealand without the required permit and 10 charges under the Crimes Act for fraudulently using a document for financial advantage.

Mr Hong's company SMT Ltd also faces two charges of exporting without a permit.

Mr Hong faces fines of up to $10,000 for the export charges and up to seven years in prison for each of the 10 Crimes Act charges.

He is expected to appear in the Auckland District Court on 15 March.
