More sign language courses wanted

The deaf community wants more sign language interpretation courses to be set up.

Currently there is only one course in Auckland, and the Deaf Association of New Zealand says that means there are very few interpreters in the South Island.

It says the deaf community relies on interpreters and without them people are often unable to live the life they want, including being able to study.

There are only four sign language interpreters in the South Island .
