Three-year-old German Shepherd Thames went missing in bush country while taking part in a search and rescue exercise three days ago.

Wellington Police Dog Section head Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson said 12 people, including dog handlers and trained search volunteers, were probing deeper gullies and "gnarly" bush.

"Thames is a fit and resourceful dog but we're all naturally concerned that there's been no sign of him. Our dogs and officers work as a team so everyone wants to find him including his handler who is part of today's search," he said.

However, recent good weather in the area was expected to change for the worse tonight.
