Police have named the driver who crashed and died in his burning car after attempting to avoid road spikes in Whanganui yesterday.
He was Callum John Meyer, 25, of Whanganui.
Mr Meyer lost control of his vehicle, which veered across the centre line, hit a large stationary truck on Tayforth Road and burst into flames.
Earlier police had attempted to stop the vehicle on Great North Road but Mr Meyer took off.
Moments later he hit a cyclist. The police pursuit was called off and officers stayed with the cyclist, who suffered moderate injuries.
Road spikes were then deployed in an attempt to halt him.
