The show opened last night in Wellington, with four performances in the capital and four in Auckland before being shipped to Germany.

A company there has bought the rights to the production along with two containers filled with costumes and stage sets.

New Zealand Opera general director Stewart Maunder said they did not expect a European company to buy their production, and it was rare for that to happen so quickly.

"It's a win win as far as we're concerned because we can get to show New Zealand at the best possible quality we can possibly muster and then we can make a little bit of money back possibly on the sale."
