Ministry takes more action against rest home

5:24 pm on 15 July 2008

The Ministry of Health has taken further action against the Belhaven rest home and its owner-manager.

The rest home in the Auckland suburb of Epsom was shut last week. A former employee faces an assault charge after an incident in which an elderly resident had her mouth taped shut.

The ministry has since followed up on the closure by issuing a cessation order to prevent Belhaven Limited trading as a rest home.

This will stop the business from providing any health services at any location from Friday.

It has served a separate order on the owner-manager so that she cannot practise as a nurse or caregiver, or be involved in running any health-related organisation.

The woman, a registered nurse, has been reported to the Nursing Council.

Only two residents remain at the rest home, and the ministry says it will help to relocate them.
