Police in Whangarei are investigating after a 14-month-old boy was fatally hit by a car in a school carpark this afternoon.
The incident happened shortly before 4pm, in the rear carpark on the corner of Hailes Road and Lincoln Place, at Kamo Intermediate School.
Emergency services were called but the boy died at the scene.
Senior sergeant Dan Cleaver said the toddler's mother was present at the time, along with a number of witnesses, who are being spoken to by the police.
He said they are trying to get a clearer picture of what happened.
The Serious Crash Unit is also investigating.
