$5000 fine for wrong labels on chairs

A New Plymouth furniture company has been fined $5000 for advertising their office chairs as 'New Zealand made' when they were manufactured almost entirely overseas.

Knights Business Furniture was convicted in the New Plymouth District Court on Tuesday for four breaches of the Fair Trading Act.

The company advertised four models of office chairs as being 'New Zealand Made' in a brochure with a silver fern underneath.

Only the foam padding for the seat and back was made in New Zealand.

The rest was manufactured in Taiwan, China and Italy.

The Commerce Commission says country of origin information must be completely accurate.
