Drum of highly toxic chemicals lost

4:48 pm on 16 July 2008

Police say a drum containing a highly toxic chemical has fallen off a truck somewhere between Auckland and Pahiatua.

The chemical, known as putrol, is an acid-based substance used to treat timber.

Police say it is poisonous and may cause fatal injuries if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through the skin.

The 200-litre black plastic drum has the label putrol on it and the number 2586.

Police say anyone who finds the drum should avoid touching it and contact the Fire Service or police immediately.
