An organisation opposed to oil drilling in Taranaki says it plans to appeal against the Environmental Protection Authority's decision to allow Shell-Todd Oil Services to continue its activities in the area.
The authority has granted the company a 35-year consent for more drilling, extraction and dumping at the Maui gas field off the Taranaki coast.
It found the overall effect of the operations at the Maui platforms, including the proposed drilling, would be negligible to minor.
Member of Climate Justice Taranaki Urs Signer said his organisation was disappointed by the decision.
"Climate Justice Taranaki has the possibility to apeal this decision by the EPA.
"And we will be taking legal advice, we will be looking over the decsion today to see what our options are in lodging an appeal."
Mr Signer said the Environmental Protection Authority has failed to use basic logic.
