More problems with Telecom XT network

10:28 pm on 18 February 2010

Telecom says it has resolved the latest problems with its troubled XT mobile network which affected customers in the lower North Island.

About 20 cell sites in New Plymouth, Upper Hutt and Wairarapa were affected in the latest incident from early on Thursday.

Telecom could not say how many customers had been affected.

Customers in New Plymouth first began experiencing problems about 3.30am.

Services to New Plymouth, Upper Hutt and Wairarapa were restored by mid-afternoon.

Telecom spokesperson Mark Watts says the faults appear to be linked to an early-morning upgrade performed on network equipment in Christchurch.

Mr Watts says Telecom apologises to customers for the inconvenience, but says the company is not considering compensation.

It is the latest in a string of problems for the XT network which began operating in May 2009.

The network had a major failure in mid-December and another in late January in which up to 200,000 customers south of Taupo were cut off for up to three days.

Telecom said it would make $5 million worth of goodwill payments after the failure in January.
