Mr Liu had been due to face trial at the Auckland District Court today over an alleged attack on his partner and her mother.

At court this morning, Crown lawyer Mark Wilton said there was no evidence to support the charges as both complainants had recanted their complaints.

Mr Liu initially originally admitted the charges, but then reversed his pleas.

All evidence leading to the charges against him has been suppressed.

Mr Liu's lawyer Paul Davison QC said his client was relieved the drawn-out case is over.

Mr Liu was at the centre of the National MP Maurice Williamson's resignation as a minister last term after it was revealed he had contacted the police about the charges.
