Worker loses leg after wood chipper accident

12:05 pm on 29 June 2015

An Auckland tree maintenance company has been ordered to pay thousands of dollars to an employee who had his leg amputated in a workplace incident.

WorkSafe has fined Tree Scape $25,000 and ordered the company to pay $35,000 in reparation to the victim whose right leg was pulled into a wood chipper machine.

The company was sentenced in the Manukau District Court on Friday for not taking all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees at work.

WorkSafe's investigation revealed Tree Scape could have extended the chute of the chipper so there was less chance staff would come into contact with it.
