Fire in Richmond bitumen plant

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus and foam put out a blaze in a bitumen plant near Nelson.

The Fire Service says three appliances were called to the plant in Richmond, about 2am on Saturday.

It says because a tank of bitumen was involved, another three appliances with foam and breathing apparatus were called in.

The fire was put out about three hours later. The cause is not yet known, but is not thought to be suspicious.
