NIWA's climate data to be challenged in High Court

9:58 pm on 15 August 2010

A group that does not believe in climate change has filed proceedings against the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) at the High Court in Auckland.

The New Zealand Climate Science Coalition says the earth has not heated as much as figures from government archives show.

The Coalition will ask the court to invalidate the country's official temperature record, maintained by NIWA, and prevent it from using the current records to provide advice to the Government.

It also alleges bias and unethical conduct on the part of NIWA's National Climate Centre.

The coalition claims NIWA has refused to reject the current temperature records to avoid political embarrassment and lose public confidence.

The hearing will take place in September.
