New Zealand's largest property website says people in East Asian countries make up less than 3 percent of those looking at property in Auckland.

In the first four months of this year, Realestate.co.nz found 2.8 percent of web searches originated in the 10 largest East Asian countries, including China, Japan and Malaysia.

This was down 0.2 percent on the same period last year.

It also found five percent were using East Asian languages.

Chief Executive Brendon Skipper said the difference in the two figures suggested a large number of searchers on the site live in New Zealand.

Last month, the Labour Party released figures it said showed as many as 40 percent of people buying homes in Auckland in a three month period had Chinese-sounding names.
