Rivers running high

11:30 am on 31 July 2008

River levels in Waikato are being closely monitored.

All rivers are running high following days of heavy rain and peak flows are still to arrive in the Waikato and Waipa Rivers.

The Waikato Regional Council says contributory streams and drains remain high, causing some flooding, ponding and land unable to drain.

On the Coromandel Peninsula: most roads are now open with the exception of State Highway 25, the Whangapoua Hill Road linking Comomandel township and Whitianga which remains closed due to a large slip.

The unsealed 309 road on the peninsula is also closed by a slip.

The Kopu-Hikuai road is down to one lane while a slip is cleared on the Hikuai side.
