Flu still gripping the country

Flu levels are continuing to rise nationwide, with nearly 400 people seeing a doctor for flu-related symptoms last week.

Canterbury clinical virologist Lance Jennings said while the flu was not as bad as in 2010 or 2012, it was troubling many people.

"For some it is really disturbing. Infections are severe. People are being admitted to hospital," he said.

"General practices are under considerable pressure, certainly in the Canterbury region at the present time and in other areas of New Zealand."

Dr Jennings said it was still possible for people to have a flu vaccination.
