Karla Cardno's father to be released from prison

7:32 am on 17 August 2015

The father of the murdered Lower Hutt schoolgirl Karla Cardno is to be released from prison at the end of the month.

The 13-year-old was brutally raped, tortured and murdered in 1989 by Paul Dally, who is serving a life sentence.

Gary Duffin was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2010 for rape, indecent assault and cannabis supply - charges that arose from an incident two years after his daughter's death.

The Parole Board has decided to release him on 26 August despite identifying him as being at medium to high risk of committing a further sexual offence.

Under the board's special conditions, Gary Duffin is not allowed to leave his home without written approval, and cannot have contact with anyone under the age of 16.
