Wellington train commuters warned of delays

12:10 pm on 16 August 2010

Train commuters between the Kapiti Coast and Wellington suffered more delays on Monday after upgrade work ran into unexpected problems.

KiwiRail was forced to cancel the services between Porirua and Wellington that usually start or end at Porirua from 7am to 8.45am.

Trains on the Paraparaumu line were running on the normal timetable but express services had to stop at every station.

Buses were replacing trains between Tawa and Wellington until mid afternoon while signal work was completed between Kaiwharawhara and Takapu Road.

KiwiRail general manager for passenger services Deb Hume says staff and contractors worked through the night to restore regular signalling operations after planned upgrade work in preparation for the new Matangi train had unexpected complications.

Union meeting likely to cause more disruption

More disruptions are in store for rail passengers on Tuesday, due to an annual union meeting.

TranzMetro will be running a reduced timetable from 10am to 2pm so staff can attend the meeting.

Services on the Upper Hutt, Paraparaumu and Johnsonville lines will run hourly, rather than half hourly.
