The family of a man who died after a prison assault held his ashes and were visibly upset as the three men accused of his murder appeared in the Christchurch District Court this morning.

Benton Parata was critically injured in the assault at Christchurch Men's Prison in March and died six days later.
Steven Betham, Akuhatua Tihi and Levi Reuben appeared via video link from prison for today's hearing.
They have been remanded in custody until October for a pre-trial appearance.
