6:30 am on 31 August 2015

A Government programme designed to combat soaring the obesity rate has been launched in Waitakere, west Auckland.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said Healthy Families initiative encouraged people to eat better food, be more active, drink less, and quit smoking.

Waitakere manager of the programme Kerry Allan said health promoters would be out in the community to help groups trying to get people healthier.

Ms Allan said the aim was for communities to come up with their own solutions to their problems.

She said there would need to be a mindshift to tackle policy and hard decisions head-on, in order to make sustainable changes to the system.
