Council wants Hamilton to Auckland commuter rail link

The Hamilton City Council is keen for a commuter train service between the city and Auckland to be tried again.

A commuter service was tried in 2001 but was discontinued because the carriages were needed for other services.

Hamilton city councillor Dave MacPherson says a passenger service between the cities would be viable, given the population of both regions.

He says such a service would help the environment and reduce traffic congestion, and a train trip would be easier than driving especially for those travelling for business reasons.

Mr MacPherson says the establishment of KiwiRail gives new hope that a decision will be made which meets the needs and aspirations of local communities.

Dave Macpherson says it is hoped that two services a day would run, helping both commuters and tourists.
