Concern over unnamed sex offender

10:35 am on 20 September 2015

An Upper Hutt school principal is dismayed the Department of Corrections has advised her of a convicted sex offender being released into the community, yet refused to say who the man is.

Oxford Crescent School principal, Leanne White, said the school should know who the person is, given the pupils are aged between five and 11.

Ms White said the privacy of the sex offender was being placed above the protection of her school's children.

"I felt they were protecting the interests of that person at the expense of the interests of my students and their parents and caregivers."

Ms White said Corrections had advised her to teach the police's Keeping Ourselves Safe programme to the children.

She will meet with Corrections to discuss it this week.
