Twenty-five veterans from the 28th Maori Battalion held a memorial service in Auckland on Sunday, as part of their annual reunion.
The service was held at the Auckland war memorial museum, with about 200 people attending.
Organiser Brian How says the annual reunion is just as important for the veterans as it is for their families.
He says it allows the veterans and their families to keep their memories alive by retelling their stories every year.
Mr How says the Maori Battalion holds a special part in New Zealand history and they deserve to be recognised.
There are 50 surviving veterans of the Maori Battalion.
