Patrick McGreevy, 45, was arrested on Saturday in Christchurch, a day after the police say he removed the anklet.

McGreevy indicated today in the Christchurch District Court that he would defend the charges and asked for trial by jury.

He has been remanded in custody for two days, when his lawyer will argue why he should be granted bail.

Department of Corrections staff said the convicted child sex offender had been been convicted of breaching his extended supervision order six times.

It said he was recently subjected to new electronic monitoring protocols, which were introduced to "enhance the Department's response to breaches by high-risk offenders".

Corrections said it monitored up to 4,000 offenders wearing electronic monitoring anklets, but the rate for cutting them off was low, at 0.5 percent.
