Many misguided over KiwiSaver guarantee - survey

2:45 pm on 10 March 2010

Almost half of all New Zealanders registered with KiwiSaver wrongly believe the Government guarantees their investments, a survey suggests.

UMR Research found that 48% of KiwiSaver members thought their particular KiwiSaver fund had a government guarantee and a further 37% were unsure.

Just 15% knew that no such guarantee exists.

UMR Research director Tim Grafton says KiwiSaver funds represent all or part of New Zealanders' life savings for retirement and they need to be aware that there is no guarantee.

The research, conducted between 4 March and 7 March, surveyed 750 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6%.
