Line reopens after wine train derailed

Updated at 6:17 pm on 12 March 2010

The Main Trunk Line near Palmerston North reopened shortly before 6pm on Friday after being closed for nearly 24 hours by a train which derailed, spilling wine from four wagons.

The incident on Thursday night, at Tokomaru, southwest of Palmerston North, disrupted the Overlander and Capital Connection passenger services.

KiwiRail spokesperson Kevin Ramshaw says it was a challenge getting cranes across a farmer's paddock to lift the train.

He says that was accomplished on Friday afternoon.

Mr Ramshaw says passengers were taken by bus.
