Tasman rower set for Ninety Mile Beach landfall

Updated at 8:02 pm on 13 March 2010

The support crew of a trans-Tasman rower, Shaun Quincey, say they are now sure he will make it to New Zealand.

The 25-year-old is expected to arrive somewhere near the middle of Ninety Mile beach in Northland after 6am on Sunday, after 54 days at sea.

Shaun Quincy was about 50 kilometres off the coast of the north island on Saturday evening.

A member of his ground crew, Oliver Young, says Mr Quincy is rowing in a 5 to 10 metre swell and could not yet see land.

The only other person to row the Tasman Sea solo is Mr Quincy's father, Colin, who made the crossing in 63 days in 1977.
