Review could see inshore fishing limit extended

A review of maritime laws could lead to the inshore commercial fishing fleet having its outer limit for fishing increased almost ten-fold.

The present coastal fishing limit is 12 nautical miles, but the industry is seeking an extension to 100 nautical miles.

Maritime New Zealand is half-way through a two-year review of qualifications and operational limits for commercial and recreational boat operators.

An increase to a 100 nautical mile limit has been heavily favoured by commercial fishermen so far.

The Federation of Commercial Fishermen says it would allow them to catch highly migratory species such as albacore tuna, which are seasonally lucrative.

Maritime New Zealand says any changes are not likely until at least 2013.
