Police investigate email threat

8:22 pm on 7 November 2015

Police are investigating an email threat from people claiming to be part of the Syrian Electronic Army.

The supposed terrorist hackers have been sending emails warning that unless the recipient pays 1500 bitcoins, the files on their computer will be lost, someone in their family will be killed, and their house destroyed by fire.

Acting national crime manager Paul Berry said the police were investigating the threatening email as some people who received it could feel vulnerable.

Mr Berry said anyone who felt at risk should contact their nearest police station to express their concern.

"We would like anyone who has received the SEA email to send it to firescam@police.govt.nz in order to help us with our investigation".
