The police on Auckland's North Shore say the condition of a takeaway store owner who was beaten unconscious on Thursday night is improving.

The 39-year-old man was assaulted at his All Go kebab store on Wairau Road in Glenfield by two males.

He suffered severe facial wounds and had been in a coma in intensive care at Auckland Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Adam Lough says the man is now out of a coma but is expected to require a lengthy period of recuperation.

He says the police investigation is making steady progress, but they are still trying to establish a motive for the attack.

The police want to hear from anyone who may have information that could assist them with their enquiry.
