Government presents human rights report to UN

New Zealand's latest report on human rights has been presented to the United Nations.

Justice Minister Simon Power delivered the report in New York, as required under the international covenant on civil and political rights.

Under the covenant, New Zealand is required to report periodically on how it's implementing its obligation under the international agreement.

Mr Power made an initial statement addressing New Zealand's recent human rights' record and the challenges it faces.

He then addressed specific questions from members of the Human Rights Committee.

The minister says that despite the difficulties caused by the recession, New Zealand can be proud of its history in human rights.

He says the presentation of the report provides an important opportunity to engage in candid dialogue about the relevant issues.
