Aggressive pukeko being evicted

10:29 am on 3 September 2008

Pukeko at Virginia Lake in Wanganui are to be relocated so they can't cause any more mischief.

Wanganui District Council and Taranaki Fish & Game are developing a relocation programme to move the birds to a wetland area.

Cr Ray Stevens says there have been several problems at Virginia Lake, and moving the birds will be an ideal solution.

He says the aggression of the pukeko means they get into fights and go around breaking the eggs of other birds.

He says they will be released in an area where they will not become a problem for gardeners or property owners.
