Council won't back harbour bridge cycleway

Auckland City Council's Transport Committee has decided it will not fund a cycling and walking lane across the Harbour Bridge.

The cost of providing the lane has been estimated at between $23 million and $42 million.

Committee chair Ken Bagley says the cost cannot be justified, when the numbers using the lane would be so small.

It has been estimated that between 750 and 1900 people would use the cycling and pedestrian lane each day.

Spokesperson for the cycling section of the Get Across campaign, Barbara Cuthbert, says the council has overlooked the recreation and tourism benefits of the lane.

Auckland Regional Council and the North Shore City Council have still to consider the lane.
