Among the first to arrive at the Auckland grounds were school mates from Wesley College, all wearing the All Black star's number 11 on their black shirts.
Past and present All Blacks are also attending, as is the chair of World Rugby, Bernard Lapasset.
A haka powhiri by Ngati Whatua will begin the memorial service.

Jonah Lomu's father in law Merv Quirk will lead the opening prayer and there will be messages and tributes from Prime Minister John Key, rugby leaders and friends.
Pupils from Lomu's old school Favona Road will join in singing the national anthem, and Wesley College students will take the the All Black's casket around Eden Park before a final haka.
Auckland Transport said there would be extra capacity on the trains, which run every 15 minutes to the Kingsland station.
It said traffic restrictions would be put in place, in a similar way to when there was a rugby or cricket game on.
The memorial service is expected to run for two hours, from 1pm.
