Police in Auckland have started civil proceedings against several companies associated with a well-known restaurant chain in the city and $34 million in assets have been frozen.

It comes following a joint investigation involving Immigration New Zealand, the Labour Inspectorate, Inland Revenue and the police.

Detective Inspector Paul Hampton of the Police Financial Crime Group said the joint investigation demonstrated the willingness and ability of government agencies to work together to protect the community, detect and prosecute offenders, and recover ill-gotten gains.

The name of the company is suppressed.
